August: National Family Fun Month

August: National Family Fun Month

Right around this time every year, we ask ourselves, where did the summer go? But, it’s not over yet and we want to take advantage of these last few weeks before heading back to school. Luckily, August is Family Fun Month! If you’re in need of a few fun activities to do with the family, we’ve got you covered! Happy end of summer!

Make a Bucket List

We love Coffee Cups and Crayons’ Old School Summer Bucket List. Follow her lead by brainstorming fun family activities that you did when you were younger or add new ones. There’s nothing better than quality time with those you love, but we are usually distracted by everything else going on. Have everyone in the family unplug from their devices and enjoy a break from all the electronics. Did you run through a sprinkler as a child? Do you want to do something more relaxing like cloud watching? Whatever you did in your youth and whatever you add to your bucket list, sharing these childhood memories and creating new ones is a great way to spend time as a family!

Family Activity Jar

And if you're running out of time to do all those fun activities together, create a Family Activity Jar! Skinny Mom’s Summer Activity Jar is loaded with hand-written activities to keep the kids moving. Write down all those activities you have yet to do with the family and put them in an empty jar. Have a different family member pick from the jar every day for year-round fun!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Is your family taking a vacation soon? We’ve got a perfect way to keep the kids entertained! Green Mustache’s Founder loves to joke around and be silly with her girls by quizzing them to pass the travel time. Below are some fun questions that will put your kids to the test!

  • Name three vegetables that look like leafs (spinach, kale, lettuce, etc.)
  • Name a fruit that has seeds on the outside (strawberries)
  • Instead of buying fruits and vegetables at the grocery store/supermarket, where else can you get them locally? (farmers market, grow them yourself, orchards, fruit carts/roadside stands, etc.)
  • Name foods that are red [pick a color of your choice] (raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, radishes, etc.)
  • Name fruits that look alike but taste different (oranges and grapefruit, lemons and limes, cantaloupe and honeydew)
  • What fruits have fuzzy skin? (peaches, kiwi)
  • What vegetables are flowers? (broccoli and cauliflower)
  • What are popular fruits to bake in a pie? (apple, strawberry, rhubarb, peach, blueberry, etc.)

We hope you take advantage of the last summer month and have a ton of fun with your family this August! We’re curious -- what will you do?!
